Stye and Chalazions

Heights Eye Studio can help diagnose and treat a stye! A stye, or hordeolum, is an infected oil gland that has the appearance of a pimple or bump at the base of your eyelid or inside your eyelid.

Eye Infection Symptoms:

  • Swelling of eyelid
  • Redness of eyelid
  • Discomfort when pressure is applied or by blinking
  • Excessive tearing
  • Blurred vision if the stye is large

Treatment Of A Stye

Styes may rupture and drain by themselves similar to a pimple. However, some styes may need an eye doctor for additional treatment. Treatment for a stye is highly recommended otherwise there is a high likelihood of recurrence. Styes are usually treated with a prescription for an oral antibiotic to reduce bacteria in the eyelid. In addition, continuously applying a hot compress to your eye for 10-15 minutes at a time will speed up the healing process. In some cases, styes can be surgically lanced and drained. It is important to note that you should never pop a stye because this can spread the bacteria and cause a worse infection that can even lead to your brain.

Chalazion

A chalazion is similar to a stye except it is an enlarged bump on your eyelid caused from a blocked oil gland. The biggest difference between a stye and a chalazion is that chalazions are typically non-infectious. Many times, a chalazion is the result from an old stye that did not resolve. Traditional treatment for chalazions include warm compresses, lid hygiene, steroid injections, or surgical removal. Heights Eye Studio offers the newest non-invasive procedures to treat styes.
