Punctal Plugs (Lacrifill)

What Is Lacrifill?
For many people, dry eye isn't caused by a lack of tears. It's caused by tears draining away too quickly. Lacrifill is an advanced canalicular gel that addresses this directly, helping the eye hold onto its own natural tears for longer-lasting comfort.
At Eye Studio, we offer Lacrifill as a modern alternative to traditional punctal plugs. Instead of an external plug sitting in the tear duct opening, Lacrifill is a soft, FDA-cleared hyaluronic acid gel placed inside the drainage channel itself. Because it fully conforms to the shape of the canaliculus, there's no risk of it shifting, falling out, or causing the surface irritation sometimes associated with plugs, while still providing lasting relief from dry eye symptoms.

How Lacrifill Works
Every time you blink, tears spread across the surface of the eye to keep it smooth, comfortable, and protected. Normally, those tears drain away through tiny openings near the inner corner of the eyelids, called puncta, and travel through small channels, the canaliculi, before reaching the nose.
In dry eye patients, this drainage often happens too quickly, leaving the eye's surface under-lubricated and prone to burning, grittiness, and fluctuating vision. Lacrifill addresses this at the source: once placed, the soft gel creates an internal blockage that slows tear drainage, allowing more of the eye's own natural tears to stay on the surface where they're needed. Made from a substance already found in the body, it's designed to be gentle and well-tolerated, and it gradually breaks down on its own over time.

What to Expect During Treatment
Lacrifill is placed during a quick, in-office procedure. After numbing drops are applied, your eye doctor gently accesses the punctum and uses a fine cannula to place a small, customized amount of gel into the canaliculus. Most patients feel only mild pressure, and the entire process takes just a few minutes per eye.
There's no downtime, you can resume normal activities right away. Relief from dry eye symptoms typically lasts several months, and because the gel is temporary and adjustable, your doctor can flush it if it's ever needed.
